Karen Mierow is the Maryland Department of Planning’s newest regional planner for Southern Maryland.  She provides local planning assistance and education coordination to Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties as well as overall support to the department Local Assistance and Training Division.

Karen earned Master’s degrees in Architecture and Urban Planning from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and has extensive experience in city planning and urban design. She worked for the City of Milwaukee in the Department of City Development’s Long Range Planning division for 14 years.  She is also the founder of The Yellow Chair Project, a healthy neighborhoods initiative designed to promote social connectivity in and improve the physical landscape of the Thurston Woods neighborhood in northwest Milwaukee, which received a Mayor’s Design Award last year.  When she’s not reading, biking, or cooking, Karen enjoys exploring Maryland with her rescued greyhound, Scarlett.  Look for her in a public meeting near you.
