The Maryland State Data Center Announces Latest Release of Census Data Estimates

Planning in Progress

A division of the Maryland Department of Planning (MDP), the Maryland State Data Center (MSDC) is the state’s primary liaison with the Census Bureau. MSDC provides Maryland residents, businesses, and local governments with demographic and socioeconomic statistics. It also produces the State’s official population and household projections and develops school enrollment forecasts.

The U.S. Census Bureau releases data products from the 2020 Census periodically. For example, redistricting data (PL94-171) was previously released in August 2021.

On May 25th 2023, the Demographic Profiles and Demographic and Housing Characteristics File (DHC) were released for all geographies. Profiles show five-year age cohorts by sex, major race breakdowns, households and household relationships, housing units, occupancy, and tenure.

According to the 2020 DHC, the median age of Marylanders is 38.8, a modest increase from 2010’s median age of 38 years. The DHC data show the largest five-year age cohort in Maryland is the population aged 50 to 54, 7.1 percent of all Marylanders.

At the last census conducted in 2010, the 45 to 49 year-old cohort was the largest age-cohort representing eight percent of the total population while the 50 to 54 represented 7.6 percent of the population. Nationally, the largest five-year age cohort are those aged 30 to 34, representing 6.8 percent of the total population.
