More on Governor Moore’s Vision for a Transportation Transformation in Maryland

In his opinion article published in the Washington Times on July 18, 2023, Governor Moore laid out his vision for state investment in transportation benefitting all Marylanders. “We must expand transportation options across our state to ensure all Marylanders can get from where they live to where opportunity lies no matter their background, zip code, or income,” state Governor Moore, reiterating his administration’s promise to “leave no one behind.[1]” 

While acknowledging the importance of “fixing and making safe our roads and bridges,” Governor Moore emphasizes the need “to think beyond cars and start investing in public transportation that benefits everyone.[2]” He views access to transportation as an essential pathway to economic growth, opportunity, and prosperity. 

As a “six-month report card,” Governor Moore highlighted his administration’s major transportation initiatives and investments to date, including:

  • Investing $450 million toward the Frederick Douglass Tunnel Project to provide faster and more reliable Amtrak and commuter rail service between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. and generate 30,000 jobs in Maryland.  
  • Collaborating with partners in Delaware and Virginia, including exploration of the potential future expansion of MARC service into Alexandria and Newark. 
  • Moving forward with the Purple Line to provide better and more equitable transit access in the National Capital Region.

  • Partnering with all levels of government including Maryland’s congressional delegation, investing state funds, and bringing in millions in federal dollars for rail, bus, and infrastructure projects to benefit pedestrian, bicycle, and electric vehicle (EV) modes of travel.

Finally, in his statement, Governor Moore committed to work to ensure Maryland wins every federal dollar possible to invest in transportation that benefits all Marylanders and make this “Maryland’s decade.[3]
