New Decade Means New Comprehensive Plans

Local Spotlight

Many jurisdictions coordinate new comprehensive plans with the arrival of the decennial census. Census data is the foundation for comprehensive planning, providing a snapshot of Maryland communities, outlining growth trends, and distinguishing key demographic indicators.

In 2013, House Bill 409 increased the review period for comprehensive plans from six to ten years. To learn more about the ten-year cycle and when your jurisdiction’s review is due, please visit Planning’s Comprehensive Plan 10-Year Review Cycle webpage.

As the lead agency for both the Maryland Census 2020 and the 60-day review of comprehensive plans and amendments, Planning is steeped in this topic. Planning began listing comprehensive planning efforts in the September 2020 Planning Practice Monthly and will continue to track and publish website links in future editions.

If you are aware of a comprehensive planning process currently underway but not listed, please contact Joe Griffiths, Local Assistance and Training Manager, at joseph.griffiths@maryland.gov and we will be sure to add it to the list.

U.S. Census Announces Revised Release Dates for 2020 Census Data Products

In Case You Missed it

The U.S. Census Bureau announced revised release dates for the next set of 2020 Census data products, starting with the release of the Demographic Profile and the Demographic and Housing Characteristics File (DHC) in May 2023.

The Census Bureau stated the revised schedule enables them to take the time needed to produce the high-quality statistics the public expects. This was due largely to COVID-19 impacts on data collection, as well as the need for accurate processing and meeting confidentiality requirements; these data releases come later than the corresponding releases in the 2010 Census.

For local governments, if this revised 2020 Census data release schedule affects your comprehensive plan review/update schedule, please contact your Maryland Department of Planning regional planner to discuss how the department may be able to assist.

For more information, on 2020 Census data products and the release dates please visit https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2022/2020-census-data-products-schedule-2023.html
