Joe Rogers has had the dubious distinction of being our very last Maryland Department of Planning (Planning) team member to join the department prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, his first day on the job being only nine days before stay-at-home orders went into effect. It’s pretty safe to say that the experience of teleworking his first few months on the job are not exactly typical!

Meet the Planning Staff

David Cotton may not be new to Planning, but we are pleased to feature him in this month’s Planning Practice newsletter as a means to celebrate his many accomplishments. Having served as regional planner for the past 20 years, Dave became Director of the Western Maryland regional office in October. Most recently, Dave stepped into an exciting new role as State Program Manager for the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC). Established by an act of Congress in 1965, ARC is a regional economic development agency that represents a partnership of federal, state, and local government (See the related article on the ARC). Article: Planning working with Statewide Planning Commissioners to Reinvent an Effective Association

In a July 17th article in Maryland Matters, the Maryland Planning Commissioners Association’s (MPCA) Outreach Project was highlighted. This project is an effort to listen to stakeholders so that Maryland’s planning community can best meet the needs of local jurisdictions. The MPCA is a statewide, nonprofit educational organization of municipal, county and regional planning commissioners and boards of zoning appeals members.

MPCA members work to improve the quality of life for all Marylanders through planning, environmental protection, historic preservation, and growth management. Continue reading
