Planning in Progress

In our October issue of Planning Practice Wednesday, we highlighted the rapid progress of Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) technologies occurring in Maryland and across the country, and how the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) was gearing up for the inevitable changes driverless vehicles will bring. We promised to bring you updates as MDOT’s Maryland Connected and Automated Vehicle Working Group, the body charged with coordinating the development and deployment of CAV technologies in MD, assists with new projects or programs.

The working group has been assisting on an exciting new pilot program, Maryland’s first, on National Harbor Boulevard in Prince George’s County. “Olli,” a rectangular 3-D printed vehicle, whose looks have been likened a toaster or a lunch box on wheels, is the first self-driving shuttle in Maryland to receive a permit to operate on public roads.
