Walktober: It’s a Wrap!

Thanks to Our Partners and Participants for a Successful Walktober and Walk Maryland Day 2020

Planning in Progress

On Wednesday, October 7th, Marylanders throughout the State celebrated the 6th annual Walk Maryland Day. The weather was perfect, and the celebration was a huge success thanks to all the Walk Leaders, Sole Mates, and Sole-O walkers who took time out of their day to go for a walk.

This year, the Maryland Department of Transportation received 71 Walk Leader registrations and 84 Sole Mate registrations, representing 16 counties (these numbers do not include registrations through the partner agency/organization links). Thank you to all who came out and helped to make the day fun and a terrific success!

MDOT would also like to thank all the partners and participants for making the first-ever Walktober a success. MDOT, in collaboration with Planning, hosted four Walkinars, (walking webinars, see what we did there?!), on a variety of pedestrian topics throughout the month.

Hundreds of Marylanders participated in these informative Walkinars, which covered a wide range of perspectives, new trends, and opportunities to promote safe walking and walkability across a broad range of disciplines including health, natural resources, transportation, and advocacy.

Walktober may have come to an end, but the fun and health benefits continue! You can continue to walk and learn more about pedestrian initiatives in Maryland, and encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to take up Maryland’s official sport, by visiting the Walktober website for inspiration at:

We look forward to planning next year’s event and making it bigger and better than before. Please email us at bikepedinfo@mdot.maryland.gov to provide feedback or to express interest in becoming a future Walktober partner.

Wishing you continued good health, great walking weather, and here’s hoping we will be able to celebrate Walktober and Walk Maryland Day with you and yours in person next year!
